Hire-or-Buy Demolition Robots

Remote demolition machines are costly to own and easy to leave idle, yet hiring for every job has its own price. This guide sets out a method for comparing the two using your own order book, costs and tax position.

Start from the days you will use it

The decision turns on utilisation, so begin with your order book rather than a price list. Go through recent jobs and the work you expect to win, and estimate how many days each would have needed a remote machine, of which size, and whether two jobs would have clashed. Separate secured work from hoped-for work. If machine days cluster in short peaks, hiring covers them without a machine standing in the yard between contracts. If the work is steady and mostly suits one size, ownership becomes easier to justify. Keep the list, because it is also the evidence a lender or finance house will ask to see when you apply.

Build a full cost of owning

Owning means paying for far more than the machine. Take a listed price as the starting point, such as the Brokk 170 at about $90,000 or the Darda C12 Multi at about $45,000 in October 2026, then add the attachments you will really use, servicing and wear parts, remote-control spares, insurance, storage, a trailer or transport contract and operator training. Spread the total over the years you expect to keep the machine, net of its likely resale value, and divide by the machine days from your order book to get a cost per working day. In the UK, HMRC's guidance on the Annual Investment Allowance lets businesses claim most plant and machinery against an allowance of £1 million, and items on hire purchase once in use, though not the interest.

What a hire rate should include

Hire quotes vary in what they cover, so compare them line by line. Ask whether the rate includes delivery and collection, attachments and breaker tools, routine servicing, breakdown response, damage waiver and an operator, and what happens if the machine is not available on the agreed date. Hiring with an operator moves training and much of the day-to-day care onto the hire firm, although you still manage the site. HSE's overview of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 expects work equipment to suit its purpose and be kept maintained and inspected, with only adequately trained people using it, so ask the hirer for inspection and maintenance records and the operator's training evidence before the machine starts.

Testing the choice with a hire period

If the figures come out close, a period of hiring can settle the question with real evidence. Hire the size you expect to buy for a run of typical jobs and record actual working hours, transport moves, breakdowns and how often a different size would have suited the work better. Ask the operators what slowed them down. Ask too whether any of the hire can be credited towards a later purchase, and agree that before the hire begins rather than afterwards. Review the decision every year as your order book changes, because a machine that made sense for one large contract can turn into a burden once that work ends.

Common questions

How much does it cost to hire a demolition robot?

Rates depend on machine size, attachments, hire length, transport and whether an operator is included, so ask several hire firms to quote the same job specification. Compare the total for the job rather than the daily rate, because delivery, tools and damage cover can change the ranking.

Do I need a licence to operate a demolition robot?

Requirements vary by country and by site. Site rules often ask for a recognised plant competence card or the maker's training certificate, and employers must be able to show the operator is trained on that machine. Check the principal contractor's rules before booking anyone onto a course.
