Building Robots

Building robots take on the precise, repetitive tasks that slow a project down: laying blocks, printing layout onto slabs, tying rebar and lifting heavy materials. They work alongside your crews, who stay in charge of the build.

Buying advice

Treat model data as part of the kit

A layout printer or block-laying machine builds exactly what the model tells it, so information management becomes a cost and safety issue on site. ISO 19650-1:2018 sets out concepts and principles for managing information through building information modelling across a project, including how information is exchanged, recorded and versioned. Before a Dusty Robotics FieldPrinter marks a slab or Hadrian X lays a course, agree who approves the model revision sent to the robot, how late design changes reach it and how the as-built record flows back into the common data environment. Ask the maker how its software logs which revision each piece of work was built from.

Exclusion zones under OSHA Subpart Q

OSHA's concrete and masonry rules in 29 CFR Part 1926 Subpart Q apply whoever, or whatever, does the work. Section 1926.706(a) requires a limited access zone whenever a masonry wall is being constructed, and section 1926.701(b) requires protruding reinforcing steel to be guarded to eliminate the hazard of impalement. If you bring in a block-laying system, a lift assist such as the MULE or a rebar machine such as Tybot, plan how those zones move as the work advances and who may enter them. Ask the maker for its recommended exclusion distances, how the machine stops when someone comes too close, and how crews hand over between robotic and manual work.

Programme gains depend on site logistics

Our October 2026 pass found that the entry point was the MULE (Construction Robotics) at close to $85,000, and the Hadrian X sat highest at close to $2 million, and one listing was quote-only. The sticker leaves out mobilisation, crane time, a specialist operator or technician, and the days lost when materials arrive out of sequence for the robot. The UK Infrastructure and Projects Authority's roadmap to 2030 expects site assembly to take on aspects of a factory, with sophisticated digital workflows and more innovative machinery and robotics, so public clients may ask how you are moving that way. Keep productivity records from your first jobs with a Baubot, FBR Ltd or TyBot LLC machine, because they will support later bids.

What to look for

  • Which trade task it automates, and how much of that task it covers
  • Set-up time, site access and the conditions it needs to work in
  • How it reads your drawings or BIM model, and who operates it

Common questions

Do building robots replace skilled trades?

In most deployments they handle the repetitive part of a task, while skilled people plan, set up and finish the work. Think of them as tools that extend a crew.

Do these robots work from BIM or CAD files?

Many building robots work from digital drawings, such as layout robots that print directly from your plans. Check the file formats each model supports before you request a quote.
